Gingival display is the technical name for what is often referred to as a ‘gummy smile.’ Feeling self conscious of your gummy grin is not uncommon and at Lakeshore Dental Center we are keen to help you achieve a smile that you will love. We want you to smile wide and bright and be proud of yourself and your beautiful teeth.

A gummy smile does not have one cause, meaning that proper identification of the cause is imperative to resolve the issue. The solution will be dependent on the individual patient and the amount of visible gum tissue, the size and shape of teeth, the height and the upper lip range of motion, and the position of upper jaw and teeth in your skull.

  • If the cause of gummy smile is only the amount of gum showing, then we have to perform gingivectomy or in more severe cases crown lengthening.
  • Botox can also be used to treat a gummy smile when the top lip is the cause of the gummy smile. The paralysis created by the Botox injection prevents the upper lip from drawing too high, ensuring less gum is revealed when you smile. However, this treatment will need to be repeated every four to six months.

Gum Contouring

In order to have a beautiful smile, the scallop of the gum line has to be in a harmonious wave. To achieve that state of perfection, we perform gum contouring, which involves removing the part of gum that seems to be too long, revealing the teeth below the gum to form a more pleasing smile

  • Usually, we contour the gums before we do any Dental Porcelain Veneer procedures if the length of the gum line is not even, teeth are misaligned or if the gum looks puffy and swollen to achieve the maximum effect of a beautiful smile
  • Laser gum contouring can also be done to the same effect, exposing more of the teeth but eliminating the need for a more invasive procedure such as a gingivectomy.
